Workshops for Healthcare Professionals
Palliative Care for Older Adults
When: Mon Apr 30th to Sun May 27th, 2012 (4 weeks) ONLINE Cost: $200 (Students $100)
This workshop will introduce inter-professional learners to key concepts in palliative care,
considering the experiences and needs of older adults in hospice, hospital and community settings
Learning objectives – by the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
Format: Learners will review weekly course materials and respond to weekly questions in an online discussion forum at their discretion. In addition, the facilitators are planning a real time session once a week to complement the online instruction – Wed 7-8pm EST.
Week 1
i) Hospice Palliative Care – definition, differences (between “hospice” and “palliative care”) and delivery
ii) Unique hospice palliative care needs of the older adult
Week 2
i) Advance Care Planning: definition and approaches; tools that can be used by professionals & caregivers in hospice, hospital and community settings
ii) Establishing Goals of Care: definition and approaches; tools that can be used by professionals & caregivers in hospice, hospital and community settings
Week 3
i) Family meetings – the nuts and bolts
ii) Finding services for patients and their caregivers – tips for professionals, caregivers and older adults in need
Week 4
i) Addressing Caregiver Needs
ii) Grief, Bereavement care – what, why and how
