About Andrew Bennett
Dr. Andrew P.W. Bennett is Senior Fellow at Cardus where he also serves as Program Director for Cardus Law and Chair of the Cabinet of Canadians for Cardus’ Faith in Canada 150.
Dr. Bennett served as Canada’s first Ambassador for Religious Freedom and Head of the Office of Religious Freedom from 2013 to 2016 during which time he led in defending and championing religious freedom internationally as a core element of Canada’s principled foreign policy.
As a Senior Fellow at Cardus, Dr. Bennett works to continue to promote religious freedom, as we broaden our commentary on issues faced in Canada and around the world. This is consistent with Dr. Bennett’s passion for religious freedom. Apart from Cardus, Dr. Bennett holds the position of Research Fellow at Georgetown University’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs in Washington, DC. He also serves as a Commissioner on the 8-member commission appointed to direct the recently-launched Commonwealth Initiative on Freedom of Religion or Belief.
An academic and public servant, Andrew holds degrees in History from Dalhousie and McGill as well as a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Edinburgh. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador for Religious Freedom, Dr. Bennett served in a variety of roles in the federal public service.
