About the Speakers Dr Paul Hwang came to Canada from Singapore in 1966. He studied Biology and Chemistry at Loyola College, Université de Montreal, graduated with his BSc in 1970. At McGill University Medical School, he focussed on studies of the nervous system, including two electives at the Montreal Neurological Institute. He graduated MDCM in 1974, interned at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, and after general practice medicine Dr Hwang pursued neuroscience at the Institute of Medical Studies, receiving an MSc in 1978. His residency training in Neurology at McGill took him through Montreal General Hospital, Jewish General and St. Mary’s Hospitals, Montreal Children’s Hospital before his Fellowship in EEG at the MNI. He graduated in 1980 with his FRCPC from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Neurology. His faculty appointments included three years at the University of Colorado in Denver, 25 years at SickKids and the Department of Medicine (Neurology) at University of Toronto and 20 years at North York General Hospital in Pediatrics and Medicine. He has taught students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and been involved with clinical research in epilepsy, child neurology and electroencephalography (EEG).
Dr. Moira McQueen, LLB, MDiv, PhD, graduated in law from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and worked as a lawyer for several years, specializing in family law and juvenile court. After her Master of Divinity Degree from the Faculty of Theology, University of St. Michael’s College and the Toronto School of Theology, she graduated with a PhD in moral theology, also from St. Michael’s. She has been teaching moral theology at St Michael’s Graduate Faculty of Theology in the University of Toronto since 1994, and has written and co-authored many articles and book chapters in bioethics, fundamental ethics and other areas. Her book Bioethics Matters was updated and republished in 2011 and she is currently working on a book on moral distinctions.
Dr McQueen was appointed Executive Director of the Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute in July, 2004. The Institute, chaired by Cardinal Collins, has a mandate to conduct research and education in bioethics from a Roman Catholic perspective, and pursues bioethical issues in palliative and end of life care, reproductive technologies, stem cell experimentation and regenerative medicine, genetics, transgender issues and other current areas.
In September, 2014, Pope Francis appointed her for a five year term to the International Theological Commission, a 30-member Vatican advisory body within the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith. She was the Canadian lay representative at the Second Synod on Marriage and the Family at the Vatican in October, 2015. She was the founding President of the Serra Club of Halton in 2012, and is the President of the Serra Canada Council.
Fr Peter Turrone is Executive Director of the Newman Centre Catholic Mission and Pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology from York University in 1998. He completed his MSc and PhD studies in Medical Science and Neuroscience (1998-2004) at the University of Toronto. After graduating from U of T, he completed his Philosophy degree through the Oratory of St. Phillip Neri and later completed his Theology degree at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, Italy. He worked as missionary amongst the poor in the Mongolian desert for almost three years. He was ordained to the priesthood in September 2012.
